Booker T's Library

In addition to being Chief Executive Officer of Tuskegee Normal & Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University), Booker T. Washington founded and presided over The National Negro Business League, advised three U.S. Presidents (Teddy Roosevelt, Howard Taft, and William McKinley), travelled all over the country and Europe and became just about the most famous orator of his time.

He also wrote over a dozen books and countless newspaper and magazine articles. When did Booker T. find time to write so much? Be the first from your town or school to email us with the correct answer and the BTW Society will send you a surprise gift!

Such deserved fame and acclaim, however, was bound to arouse resentment in the minds of lesser, jealous people. Some, primarily northern black intellectuals, resented his power and influence and were angry with his patient approach to 'solving' the race question.

Dr. Washington's legacy has been smeared and misrepresented by these people for too long. He had the right approach then and as importantly, his approach today holds much promise towards achieving individual, personal, economic and racial success today.

We expect reasonable people to examine criticisms by Dr. Washington's detractors, and trust them to be able to make up their own minds. You'll find criticisms of Dr. Washington and/or his optimistic philosophy approach located in the misc tray.
